Composting is an organic fertilizer and is spread across the SoupHerb garden each year.  Compost is made up of various plant matter that has decomposed and recycled.  From bell pepper membranes to discarded grape stems, non-meat items are brought to the SoupHerb compost bins and used eventually as fertilizer.  Weeds and small branches are shredded and mixed into the compost bins, and each week the grass clippings from the lawn mower are used to blanket the moisture and heat in the bins.  The compost bins are stirred often and each spring the Kosovich family removes the lowest level (which has been turned back into dirt by our worms) and spreads it across the vegetable gardens to make room for the summer's materials.

*Tips:

  • Always keep your items small, they will decompose at a faster rate allowing more material to be used each year
  • Avoid dumping squash and pumpkin seeds in the compost, they are amazing, and will sprout in your garden at will and take up valuable space and nutrients
